Japanese Universities Offered Access to SPIE Digital Library in Collaboration with JUSTICE

Optics and photonics university students and researchers in Japan have a new option for access at reduced rates to the world’s largest collection of literature in the field. The opportunity is a result of a collaborative effort on the parts of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and the Japanese Alliance of University Library Consortia for E-Resources (JUSTICE) to allow access by opting-in consortia members to publications in the SPIE Digital Library.

Japanese researchers in optics and photonics now have a new option for access to the world’s largest collection of literature in the field. SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and the Japanese Alliance of University Library Consortia for E-Resources (JUSTICE) recently signed an agreement allowing access by opting-in consortia members to publications in the SPIE Digital Library.

The agreement provides for reduced rates for annual subscriptions, and represents a collaborative effort on the parts of SPIE and JUSTICE to increase readily available resources on light-based technologies for university students and researchers.

Researchers whose JUSTICE-affiliated libraries choose to participate in the license will be able to view or download any of the 370,000 journal articles and conference proceedings in the SPIE Digital Library.

“This is a very significant agreement for researchers in all areas of photonics as well as related disciplines,” said Toyohiko Yatagai, a professor at the Center for Optical Research and Education at Utsunomiya University and the recently elected 2013 SPIE Vice President. “The SPIE Digital Library is a continually updated collection of the latest research reports across all areas of optics and photonics, such as lasers, astronomy, biomedical optics, imaging, illumination and displays, and sensors. These technologies have applications in medicine, food safety, sustainable energy, manufacturing, community security, transportation, and many other vital areas of life. ”

“SPIE is very pleased to be able to work with JUSTICE and thereby support the Society’s mission to disseminate optics and photonics information as widely as possible,” said SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs. “Japanese researchers have provided strong contributions to our library since the first SPIE publications. JUSTICE, established in 2011, is a new consortium resulting from the alliance between the Japan Association of National University Libraries Consortium (JANUL) and the Private and Public University Libraries Consortium (PULC). Their aim is to enhance coordination among the Japanese university library community by cooperating with publishers and vendors of e-resources.
