On January 4, Linus Bike offers support for the UK’s Cycle to Work program, a bicycle purchasing program that encourages employees to commute to work via bicycle.

According to The Atlantic Cities, “an employer fronts the cost of a bike, up to £1,000 (about $1,600), and the employee pays it back over 12 months with pre-tax payroll deductions, with one final payment at the end of the period. There are several variations on the payment model, and if you pick the right bike at the right price, you can end up saving as much as 40 percent of the bike’s purchase price.”

Since the inception of the program in 1999, reports The Atlantic Cities, 400,000 people have participated which has resulted in an annual drop in carbon dioxide emissions “equivalent to the output of the city of Hereford, home to nearly 60,000 people.”

Toby Field, participant in the program and host of blog Cycle to Work Scheme Saved My Life, has ridden 10,000 miles in two years and lost 119 pounds, reports the article. According to The Atlantic Cities, Field created a video about his 10-mile commute by bicycle, which he started doing in 2010.

“Two years ago,” Field narrates in a video on his blog page, “I was a very different person. I was super-morbidly obese at [294 pounds].”

Fields adds in his video blog, “The feeling of freedom that cycling give you, the weight-loss results, the fear of failure, the peer pressure, the friends I’ve met through cycling, my family, my late father, have all been motivators.”

“Fields’ success story is encouraging for all beginner cyclists,” comments Jason Latty, Linus Bike Sales Manager. “If more employers contributed to this commuter bike program and created an incentive to bring out the athlete in all employees, massive change would emerge.”
