On January 7, Linus Bike responds to an article which reports that proposed plans for a Capital Bikeshare in Montgomery County, Washington has encountered delays due to infrastructure limitations. Linus Bike representative China Reevers supports delays to the Montgomery County bike share program to ensure safety is completely taken into consideration.
According to WTOP Maryland News, “The Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Montgomery Bicycle Advocates presented a list of projects to the county designed to make biking safer. The report recommends adding bike lanes on major roads inside the Beltway like Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring and Arlington Road in Bethesda. It also identifies trails that need to be completed, like the Metropolitan Branch Trail and the Silver Spring Green Trail.” WTOP Maryland News reports that the changes must be made in order to see production in spring 2013.
Esther Bowring, a County Spokesperson, told the Silver Spring Patch that “safety is a priority and the requests will be put on a waiting list for future consideration,” reports WTOP Maryland News.
“Safety should be the overall concern when establishing a commuter bike share program anywhere,” comments China Reevers, a Linus Bike representative. “Cyclist safety is compromised every time a cyclist shares the road with a vehicle. Every measure should be considered to increase the safety of cyclists everywhere and if Montgomery County is not ready, they should not be forced to be. Whenever Montgomery County is ready is when the Capital Bikeshare program should be established and no sooner; the safety of cyclists depends on it.”
