In a recent BBC* news report, the BBC has reported that “early detection of liver disease by GP’s non-existent”.
The comments come from a report by the Lancet Commission*, which commented that:
“Doctors and medical scientists from across the UK call for radical scale up of liver disease treatment and detection facilities in the country, which has one of the worst rates of death from liver disease in Europe”.
In a similar report of 2012, the UK Chief Medical Officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, commented on the results of the annual report on the nation's health that she was, “struck by the data on liver disease particularly. This is the only major cause of preventative death that is on the increase in England that is generally falling in other comparable European nations. We must act to change this".
One year on since our last report on this serious matter, liver disease detection remains a far-fetched reality. Liver disease is sometimes referred to as the “silent killer”. The NHS* states on its website:
“Alcohol-Related Liver Disease (ARLD) often causes no symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. If you misuse alcohol, you may have liver damage even though you have none of the symptoms”.
In all such situations it is important to seek medical advice from your GP. However, lack of early detection facilities at the GP’s surgery means individuals have to be referred to the local hospital for liver function blood tests. This can mean taking more time off work.
With the onset of the festive season, excessive amounts of alcohol will be consumed by individuals. Many will be unaware of the damage being done to their liver by alcohol.
Previous scientific laboratory tests for liver damage and recovery* have shown that baobab fruit powder exhibited significant protective activity suggesting it may play an important part in healing liver damage.
