Ragan announces its 2013 PR and Media Relations Summit to be held at NYC Con Edison Headquarters Union Square

The power company, one of the unofficial media crisis centers for Hurricane Sandy, will present a study of its communication response to the worst storm ever to hit the Northeast Coast.

Mark Ragan, CEO of Ragan Communications, announced that his company will hold its “4th Annual PR and Media Relations Best Practices Summit” for 2013 at the Union Square headquarters of Con Edison in New York City, on April 8-10.

The conference will focus on the relations between organizational PR representatives and the media in crises, and on building candid, strong, lasting relationships between PR and journalists, Ragan said.

“We’ll also be taking a hard look at PR social media measurement, content marketing and branded content, and the emergence of so-called ‘media relations superstars’ in PR,” Ragan added.

Michael Clendenin, Director of Media Relations for Con Edison, will analyze Con Ed’s campaign to keep nine million New Yorkers updated about his company’s response to Superstorm Sandy. Clendenin will examine the critical role social media played within Con Ed and without.

Social media were crucial, Clendenin believes, because of the huge area of devastation, the crippling damage to the infrastructure, and the long time it took to get basic services restored. “We needed to communicate early, honestly and often with the public, and over a longer period than ever before. We couldn’t have done it without social media, particularly video,” he said.

A panel of six “new journalists” will offer attendees their thoughts on what it takes for PR practitioners to get the attention of a media audience that now includes bloggers, online reporters, podcasters, and other digital influencers.

The conference also includes three pre-conference workshops on writing the perfect story pitch, creating a solid measurement plan, and how to shoot a powerful story-pitch video to get your message on TV.
