Millennials recently took advantage of one company’s holiday offer to donate more than $4,500 in brand new t-shirts to children in need around the world. Throughout December, Pay It Forward (PIF) Apparel started advertising that it would donate on new t-shirt for every Facebook fan that it received.
Millennials quickly took advantage of the offer by using their social media networks to raise awareness about the promotion. All of the shirts that are being donated as a result of the promotion display positive messages such as “Keep Hope Alive”, “Be the Change”, and “Use all your heart, hope, and soul to change the world”.
Positive t-shirts are not the only thing that PIF Apparel is giving away this season. The company began selling its line of chari-tees in August to help raise money for various causes both in the U.S. and abroad. 25% of every item that sold is donated directly to one of PIF’s non-profit partners. PIF partners with various NPOs to help raise funding and awareness to support causes such as childhood cancer research, HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment, childhood hunger, and environmental support, just to name a few.
PIF uses its line of t-shirts to spark the interest of Millennials, but once they are drawn in the goal becomes much more about education. PIF makes it clear that the best way for their customers to impact positive change is by supporting the organizations that already have a system in place. But the company does not partner with just any non-profit; instead they represent charities that have a history of giving a higher percentage of donations to the cause they represent. By partnering with financially responsible organizations the company is able to ensure that the money it raises ends up supporting the cause that it represents.
Unlike many other social t-shirt companies that have been popping up lately, PIFs approach is much more about giving customers the tools to impact change beyond the point of sale. In his recent article, “How Millennials Can (and should) Change the Way We Give”, PIF founder Matthew Moses discusses the importance of donors taking it upon themselves to step up and start taking action for the things that they are passionate about.
He states that, “If we (the donors) want to truly impact change we have to stop waiting for an invitation. We must start proactively pursuing ways to make a difference for the things that we are passionate about. We need to get back to the foundation of why we give.”
PIF will be releasing additional information about how the shirts will be distributed this week. A spokesperson from the company also said that they plan to continue to use this promotion to teach its supporters about different ways that they can continue to pay it forward, by outlining the steps they took for distributing the tees.
