Innovation in Demand: Product Managers and Developers see 23% Growth in Hiring

During December, more than 39,000 job ads were available for product management and development professionals, a 23% year-over-year increase, according to WANTED Analytics™.

During December of 2012, more than 39,000 job ads were seen online for Product Managers or Product Developers, according to WANTED Analytics™ (, the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. As product innovation drives business strategy in a recovering economy, demand for product development and management skills has almost doubled since the recession. The number of product management or product development job ads posted during December rose 23% compared to December 2011, 30% versus 2010, and 99% from 2009.

Since there are many different roles within an organization that contribute to product development and overall management of those lines, there are several fields that commonly require this skill set, including marketing, technical, sales, engineering, and scientific occupations. Some of the most commonly advertised job titles include Product Manager, Product Development Engineer, Quality Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, and Product Marketing Manager.

The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of online job ads for product management and product development professionals were San Francisco, San Jose, New York, Boston, and Seattle. Not only does the Silicon Valley see the highest demand with a combined 7,900 job ads in San Francisco and San Jose, but they are also experiencing the highest year-over-year growth. Demand in San Francisco grew 55% compared to December 2011 and San Jose increased by 41%.

Nationwide, these positions are likely to be difficult-to-recruit. With more than 8,900 employers currently sourcing for Product Managers or Product Developers, there is heavy competition to attract qualified talent. According to the Hiring Scale, the locations currently experiencing some of the most difficult conditions for recruiting this talent are Athens (Georgia), Bend (Oregon), and Bloomington-Normal (Illinois). In these areas, there is higher demand by employers in comparison to the available, local talent pool. This factor not only contributes to more difficult recruiting, but also increases the time-to-fill, with ads remaining online for an average of 7 weeks – one week longer than the national average.

According to the Hiring Scale™, the locations with the least difficult conditions for sourcing product management and product development skills are currently Fort Smith (Arkansas), Huntington (West Virginia), and Binghamton (New York). While the US average Hiring Scale score is 86 (out of a possible 99, with 99 denoting the hardest-to-fill) the score in Binghamton is 25. Recruiters here are likely to have more potential candidates to choose among and spend a shorter time sourcing candidates than the rest of the United States. Online job ads in these areas are posted for as short as 3 weeks.
