Fitness Expert Lorna Kleidman Responds to 2012 Fitness Trends

An article published by Reuters reveals that last year’s trends in fitness included CrossFit, mud runs and a turn toward more social workouts. Lorna Kleidman, a kettlebell trainer, responses to the report and offers fitness advice for the New Year.

On January 7, Lorna Kleidman responds to a recent article published by Reuters which reports on 2012’s fitness trends. In addition, Kleidman adds her own exercise insight.

According to the article from Reuters, 2012 saw a big increase in socializing during fitness workouts. For example, spinning classes increased in popularity during the last year because it gave people the opportunity to workout with their friends and have fun while getting in shape.

Last year also saw the emergence of “mud runs,” which are typically outdoor obstacle courses that can be run individually or by team. Due to the use of teams, these obstacle races, which usually benefit some sort of charity, also become a social way of working out.

The article also cites Donna Cyrus, Senior Vice President of Programming at the Crunch national chain of fitness centers. Cyrus said that dance classes and short workout programs dominated group fitness.

“Going into 2012 everybody was looking for the next Zumba,” Cyrus said. “We find that people are looking for fun, easy-to-follow dance moves.”

According to the article, CrossFit classes also spiked in popularity last year. These classes offer an intense, constantly changing regimen, along with the CrossFit Games, which is a series of competitions based around CrossFit workouts.

“One thing that this article fails to mention is the rise of kettlebell exercises,” said fitness expert Lorna Kleidman. “Personally, I’m witnessing tremendous growth in the realization of what kettlebells offer – a fun and effective workout that strengthens and tones your core and other essential muscle groups, enhances stamina and heart rate capacity as well as giving users an elegant, confident posture.”

Kleidman added that kettlebell classes offer a way to stay social during your workout, which will in turn motivate you to put in 100 percent and get the best results possible. “Many of the movements performed in my classes are partner-based, but not dependent on ability. It’s an incredible opportunity to share your workout or make new friends.”

Lorna Kleidman is a Three-Time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country.
