On January 14, Spartan Race responds to Yuki Kawauchi’s recent marathon finish in two hours and ten minutes, only two weeks after finishing a different marathon with a similar time.

Two seems to be the magic number for Yuki Kawauchi: two weeks, two marathons, and two hours apiece. According to a recent article from Runner’s World, the absurdly consistent Japanese runner won the Hofu Yomiuri Marathon in 2:10:46, just two weeks after placing sixth in a marathon in Fukuoka, with a time of 2:10:29. Apparently, the article reports, he was disappointed by the latter finish, as he was attempting a time below 2:08.

As disappointed he may be, Kawauchi still set a world record for “the shortest span of time between sub-2:11 marathons,” according to the article. What’s even more astonishing is that Kawauchi works a full-time job that is unrelated to running. The article states that marathons are simply a hobby for the runner, who has five career marathon wins. According to the article, Kawauchi races “to find out whether the common sense of the running world is really any kind of sense at all,” in his own words.

In response to this feat, Spartan Race issues a response. “This man is a shining example of how to remain steadfast in your endurance training,” said Carrie Adams, a representative for Spartan Race. “If you’re ever looking for inspiration when trying to get off the couch and go for a run, just think about how much fitness nuts like Kawauchi accomplish on a daily basis. Remember that if you can complete half the training this guy does, you’ll be in phenomenal shape. If you’re really up for a challenge, then I recommend taking on an obstacle run, like that of Spartan Race, for a marathon you will never forget.”
