It's clear from the outset that something's wrong with Lela White. She enters the scene in an astronaut's house, watching him sleep. Bad enough that she's broken into his home--but she's armed with a poison that can, given the slightest whim, kill immediately. In contrast, the Lela we see the next morning is a normal, slightly geeky sleep technician who loves her job, has close friends, and likes reading to kids.
The account of a woman living a world of delusion, Nicole Wolverton's debut novel, The Trajectory of Dreams, barely gives the reader a chance to breathe--let alone sleep. Told in the first person, the story leaves one guessing at every turn, unsure whether the events depicted are true-to-life or filtered through an increasing unstable narrator.
As Lela begins to unravel, the story becomes darker. It all begins with a Russian cosmonaut on loan to the U.S. space program. He takes an interest in her, threatening her elaborately-constructed world--and, she believes, menacing his own launch.
