Every year students who think they might not qualify miss out on aid by not applying. Student Aid Saturdays announces their 2013 city-wide partnership focused on increasing the number of students who go to college.

Students get free one-on-one help filling out FAFSA/TAFSA forms which increases their likelihood of going to college.

Research shows that filling out the FAFSA significantly increases a student’s likelihood of attending college.

High school seniors and their family members who are heading off to college or to a technical program can get help with filling out their college financial aid forms through the Student Aid Saturdays (SAS) program.

Student Aid Saturdays will be hosted at local high schools, college campuses and at Cafecollege downtown. This year, the program is sponsored by Firstmark Credit Union and is in partnership with SA2020, The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio Education Partnership, and GenerationTX San Antonio.

“Research shows that filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form significantly increases a student’s likelihood of attending college,” said The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Richard Perez. “This is why this program is vital to our city, and why we need to all come together to help get the word out.”

“The impact of Student Aid Saturdays has a ripple effect in our community,” Leon Ewing, President/CEO of Firstmark Credit Union. “It immediately helps students who need assistance get into college. That, in turn, produces a better-educated workforce, which ultimately is good for our community. We are honored to sponsor this important program, as well as to support the volunteer efforts. We hope other San Antonio companies will follow suit and sign up to help.”

Most colleges and universities require the FAFSA form in order for a student to qualify for any financial aid and including many scholarships. San Antonio still has a low rate of completion of the FAFSA. SAS is aiming to raise that level significantly. This is the second year for the program. During the inaugural year, more than 1,000 students and their families participated.
