Lorna Kleidman urges kettlebell trainers to utilize proper footwear when performing kettlebell exercises in light of an article released by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS).

On January 10, fitness trainer Lorna Kleidman, in an effort to bring awareness to kettlebell trainers, is asking that proper footwear be worn to avoid injury that could be sustained during kettlebell exercises.

An article released by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), offers advice on physical awareness of the feet to avoid sustaining injury. The AOFAS suggests using shoes designated for specific activities since most shoe designs are not universal. According to the AOFAS, “Flatfeet and high arched feet are other factors that can be addressed by various shoes or insoles. Also, stretching exercises for the entire lower extremity including the leg, ankle, and foot are useful to condition the muscles, tendons, fascias, ligaments, and joints.”

Lorna Kleidman, creator of KettleX and three time kettlebells champion, knows the importance of physical prowess and encourages kettlebell trainers to practice safety above all practices. “I know from experience that those who do not practice basic safety when training with kettlebells can injure themselves,” comments Kleidman. “While the bells are fun and easy to use, there are basic safety issues that should be practiced. After all, it’s a moving object, so don’t be careless.”

Lew Schon, MD and the current president of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, suggests, “People need to slowly increase their exercise intensity (the aggressiveness) frequency (the number of times), and duration (the length of time), especially if starting to exercise or introducing new physical activities.”

“We do not want to go over the physical cliff where we propagate microtears and microfractures into full-blown overuse syndromes, which require orthopaedic intervention," adds Schon.

Lorna Kleidman is a Three-Time World Champion and World Record holder in kettlebell sport and the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country. She developed the innovative methods used in KettleX as a way to bring the benefits of the bells to everyone in an easy-to-use, comprehensive and fun format. Lorna has been teaching individuals and group classes for the past six years.
