Steve Schanker is a Kansas City DUI attorney who represents individuals facing charges for a Missouri DWI or a Kansas DUI. Attorney Schanker is more than a dedicated attorney; he is also committed to helping those in need throughout his community. He was recently chosen to serve on the Board of Directors for the local charity Hands to Hearts, a position he was honored to accept.
According to Hands to Hearts, there are more than 37,000 children in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties that struggle with food insecurities. For this reason, Hands to Hearts was started in the spring of 2009 with the goal of helping these innocent children. Initially the program consisted of providing backpacks filled with nutritious food to more than 150 inner-city children to take home from summer school on Friday afternoons. Once the fall session began, Hands to Hearts partnered with Harvesters BackSnack program to reach out to even more children every week. These needy children would take home backpacks filled with healthy food to fill in the gap on the weekends when the school’s free lunches were unavailable, and the children would replenish them the following week.
Since the program was initiated in 2009, it has expanded dramatically; for example, H2H has partnered with Harvesters, which is the area’s only food bank. In service since 1979, Harvesters is a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and necessary household products. Harvesters’ network includes over 620 nonprofit agencies throughout the 26-county service area which includes emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, children’s homes, and homeless shelters. The network provides food and assistance to nearly 66,000 residents each and every week.
Last year alone, Hands to Hearts was able to serve 1600 students in 27 schools throughout Kansas City, Shawnee Mission, and KS school districts. In addition to providing food for school children, H2H began a warm winter clothing drive where it maintained in-school clothing closets for their BackSnack schools upon request, and they set up free clothing stores for schools that needed them. In December of 2010, H2H began a partnership with Silver City Elementary in Kansas City to work with the school on special projects to provide school volunteers and reading tutors that are trained through the local school districts’ YouthFriends program.
Attorney Steve Schanker was eager to accept a position on the Board of Directors for Hands to Hearts. By accepting this position he is able to continue his ongoing commitment to helping the Kansas City community, and by helping children in need particularly, it gives them hopes for a brighter future where they can one day become productive citizens who will one day contribute to their own communities.
