Over the years, the world has become more complex and family life offers more challenges. The definition and responsibilities of “motherhood” have changed in both role and meaning. More mothers work outside the home and juggles time management, parenting, professional, and family issues, while they also doubles up as a life partner and colleague. Single mothers have an all-encompassing job and tries to be everything in the face of great hardship, many with little support. Yet motherhood remains the most important, all-encompassing job performed without an instruction manual. While expectations are high there is also a perceived sense that perfection ought to be the standard.

The Ties That Bond written by Yvonne M.P. Lee is a compilation of thoughts, feelings and experiences of the girl inside all daughters. It reveals honesty, reflections and challenges of the profound mother daughter relationship. For many years, Lee has intently observed and attentively listened to the stories of mothers and daughters who express their thoughts and feelings about their relationships. In many communities today, everyone also sees the transformation of mother, mothering, and motherhood. There’s also a myriad of reasons why women choose to become mothers.

This book serves as a tribute which recalls a retrospective account of a mother’s contribution as far as relationships with her daughter is concerned. It also tends to remind readers that in every mother daughter relationship, mothers will always be the child’s first teacher, first love, and first world. The messages they communicate to their children (subliminal or otherwise) will be interpreted according to their developmental understanding. Communicating with mixed messages may confuse them and thus may also become a source of great ambivalence, hence, there’s a need for consistency in applying communication approaches.

The Ties That Bond shares with readers a fresh look on mother daughter relationship from the outside looking in as Lee provides a clearer understanding that mothers come as they are as well as gives all they know and learned. Indeed, motherhood is undoubtedly a daunting job, a complex role, with no instruction manual, but the unconditional love and nurture mothers give will always brings out the best in their children.
