New Picture Book Portrays the Secret Night Life of House Cats

Common house cats can spend more than 14 hours a day sleeping, though they can be very active at night, and, despite their domesticated natures, they remain skilled hunters of mice and other small creatures. Author and cat-admirer Saren Johnston depicts these seldom seen nocturnal feline activities with a quirky twist in her new picture book, “Pounce-Attack.”

Johnston tells the story of four house cats as they explore the garden at night. During their adventures, they encounter many whimsical creatures, including a snake that can frost cakes and a caterpillar made of springs. When these creatures wander too close to the cunning kitties, they get a lightning-fast pounce-attack.

Romping beneath the star-filled moonlit sky, the felines have the time of their lives chasing the garden’s little denizens. But just like children who wear themselves out at play, the cats tire in time of their pounce-attack game and come indoors to find their human companion. Content with their evening escapades, the kitties fall asleep surrounded by the comforting sounds of home.

“Pounce-Attack” is a colorfully illustrated picture book depicting the adorable adventures of house cats and showing a little known aspect of their lives, namely their nocturnal exploits. Children and cat-lovers alike will find Johnston’s work a very enjoyable reading experience starring one of the world’s all-time favorite pets, the domestic cat.
