Quality Metalcraft Inc., a Livonia, Michigan-based automotive parts and prototype supplier, is lead sponsor of a new arts installation in Detroit’s Kunsthalle Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art.
STALA Universe will bring together video, light, and music to highlight the industrial design and manufacturing capabilities in the Motor City. The exhibit opens January 18th at 7 pm at Kunsthalle Detroit in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show’s VIP party.
STALA refers to an existing industrial light installation in Detroit’s North Corktown neighborhood. Quality Metalcraft manufactured hundreds of outdoor sidewalk lights using cutting-edge technologies it has developed for low-volume automotive fabrication.
“For Detroit to survive as a major manufacturing center with high-paying jobs, we must continue to apply our technologies outside of traditional automotive applications,” said Michael Chetcuti, CEO of Quality Metalcraft.
“The STALA project was attractive to us because it shows we can fabricate anything in metal.”
The STALA lights, designed to resemble stalagmite formations, will be shown as part of the STALA Universe exhibition, for which Quality Metalcraft also fabricated the installation grid.
While it remains one of the world’s leading low-volume suppliers to the automotive industry, Quality Metalcraft has diversified in the last decade and now supplies stamped and laser-cut steel to the architectural, lighting, marine, and military industries.
In 2007, Quality Metalcraft delivered more than 11,000 tons of custom-fabricated steel for the façade of the Motor City Casino and Hotel. “No two panels were the same, and it was all to automotive specs,” Chetcuti said. “Nobody in the world could have done that cheaper or faster than we did.”
The Kunsthalle Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 5001 Grand River Avenue, Detroit.
