While Garmin Edge 510 and 810 have the cycling community buzzing, it is the Garmin Edge 510 that has seen the greatest level of generational improvement by far, according to the Heart Rate Watch Company.
"Some pundits are expressing disappointment at the level of improvement, but I don't think they are closely enough examining the Garmin Edge 510 as opposed to the Garmin Edge 810," says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "Adding touch screen to the Garmin 510 was brilliant, the out front bike mount was genius for improving safety and the instant upload with social features adds a whole new dimension to real-time tracking."
According to Squire, it's kind of like the car industry using all of its best ideas on one model. "Then there is no room for upgrades or what we used to call planned obsolescence," says Squire. He adds, "The bottom line is the Garmin Edge 510 brought a lot of nice improvements to the party and more than enough to make a worthy upgrade."
The Heart Rate Watch Company already voted the Garmin Edge out front bike mount as the best new accessory of 2013. "We've tested it already and the increased field of view from being able to keep your eyes on the road is a real cheap insurance policy," says Squire.
Garmin Edge 810 added the instant uploads and social features but it already had touch screen according to Squire. "Edge 510 came out a little better on the side of total upgrades, but it is still the out front bike mount that we regard as the greatest improvement because the safety improvement is very real," says Squire.
"We'll be giving several new Garmin 510 units to members of the Team Rockford that we sponsor in conjunction with Garmin," says Squire. He adds, "Our big priority however is to get everyone riding with a Garmin Edge out front bike mount to improve their safety - we are like a family."
