In Unexpected, author Grace Simmons tells the story of Sally Jenkins, an average girl, who is nearly killed when she goes on a routine bike ride and is suddenly blindsided by a car. She survives the attack, but her “accident” is just the first in a string of assassination attempts, as deadly forces with sinister forces begin to hunt her down.
Sally manages to use a magical artifact to defend herself from an attack, and soon figures out that their enemies are more than human, and that they are out there, watching her and her group of eight friends, preying on them. She gains the help of Thomas and Talia, who work with her to uncover the truth about her dangerous past, but the enemies they face are extremely powerful, and all of them must work together to defeat their magical foes.
This string of deadly events sows tension in the group, however, and Sally’s friends and allies must learn to cooperate if they are to survive and, most importantly, succeed. When they become mired in the tides of an even greater conflict, they learn that they only have each other for support, and that they must stand together, united as one, if they hope to make it out of the battle alive.
“I wanted to prove that kids can do things too. You don’t need to be an adult to make a difference,” Simmons shares.
Unexpected is a coming-of-age adventure story depicting a young girl and her circle of friends battling a rising force of evil. Readers will find Simmons’ work to be an action-packed tale full of mystery and magic, thrills and excitement that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
