Parker High School is not like any run-of-the-mill high school. It is dedicated exclusively for pregnant teenage girls in the Alternative School For Educational Advancement program (ASFEA). In Byron C. Taylor, Sr.’s novel, The Fat Girl Bus, readers can follow how a group of pregnant teenagers’ lives are changed by the people around them and the circumstances that force them to make drastic decisions with far-reaching consequences.

Each year brings new faces, new problems, new challenges, and new expectations at Parker High School. With last year’s group of girls, the meaning of the word “challenges” has risen to a whole new level. After experiencing the previous year’s mayhem, Mrs. Thompson, Parker High School’s principal, thoroughly believes she is prepared for anything unexpected that could possibly come her way. Never would she have suspected that there wasn’t anything that could have prepared her for what lay ahead.

Set in the early 1990s, in Bansfield, New York, The Fat Girl Bus explores the controversial attitudes of the school district’s administrative powers and their approach on what to do about the education of pregnant teenage students. The story spans from the fall semester through the spring semester, approximately eight months in the lives of the principal, students, parents, and the school bus driver at Parker High School. There is never a dull moment on the school bus in usual circumstances, but the engaging, dramatic, and enlightening sequence of events at the core of this story becomes a rite of passage for them all, transforming their lives forever.
