SaveOnBrew Announces No Plans to Expand into Other Commodities, Encourages Others to Develop Consumer-Focused Price Search Models

SaveOnBrew, the nation’s only beer price search engine, announced it would not use its proprietary methodology to to move into other commodities like milk, soft drinks, cigarettes, wine, meat or video games. Although the company does not plan to grow that way, the price search site could serve as a model to other startups.

SaveOnBrew.Com, the internets only beer price-search engine, announced today that it would not be pushing into other, similar commodities.

When it debuted, the SaveOnBrew beer price search engine was a revolutionary tool for consumers. There was no more ad collecting, phone call making or driving around from retailer to retailer. Instead, beer drinkers simply entered their zip code and showed all of the advertised beer deals.

“SaveOnBrew is really a Godsend for me and my friends,” writes one avid SaveOnBrew user. “We’re in college, so we go through a LOT of beer. I’d say we save, on average, $50 a month by shopping the deals in our area. That’s not including how much money we save on gas because we’re not driving all over town hunting for sales anymore. Our parents love SaveOnBrew too for saving them money. Ha!"

Since 2010, the company has received many letters of fans asking that they branch out to cover other commodities.

“Beer is one of those staple products in the household – like milk and bread,” explains site founder Mark Davidson. “So we knew right away that we had developed a gold mine in creating a search engine for national beer prices. It was also particularly beneficial for microbreweries and smaller retailers who had competitive prices but perhaps not so much advertising leverage.”

“People always want us to do wine, cigarettes, milk, soft drinks, meat… even video games,” Davidson says. “Like Ben Franklin said, every penny saved is a penny earned, and we’re happy to help people save money on beer.” He adds that that sort of expansion is quite a ways off. “That being said, we do encourage other startups to contact us to find out how our business model works if they are interested in using our platform to launch a similar concept for another commodity.”    

Davidson admits that the money doesn’t flow in immediately. As with anything, it takes time, energy and effort to build a brand and get the word out. Yet, the site's ever-increasing traffic indicates a huge consumer demand for beer pricing information.

“Usually it’s a matter of manufacturers and retailers catching up with the latest technology,” Davidson explains. “For example, we offer a helpful mapping tool that brewers and distributors can access for free to direct consumers to their various locations. We also have ad space available on the site at extremely affordable rates. Most importantly, it’s free to have beer deals posted in our database.”

In a world where everything costs, it’s nice that the database is free for consumers.

“No, we’re not going to go public and make the same mistake that Facebook did,” Davidson laughs. “But we are always looking to forge new partnerships and get involved with new endeavors that could lead to something more lucrative down the road.”
