Texas insurance agency, Noltensmeyer Insurance Services, recognizes January as National Blood Donor Month. In the United States, the need for blood is on the rise. Approximately 44,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency centers for patients with diseases and issues EACH DAY! This demand continues to increase as the years pass. As a result of the demand, it is important that this act is encouraged in communities, for it is a way to give back and possibly give a better life to individuals in need.
“It is estimated that 10.8 million volunteers donate blood each year, 29% of which are first time donors,” according to AABB. However, while an estimated 38% of Americans are eligible to donate blood at any time, less than 10% do so annually. In light of Blood Donor Month, Noltensmeyer Insurance Services believes that it is time for the Texas community to consider donating blood.
There are specific criteria to meet for blood donation. Individuals should only donate if they are:
- In good health
- At least 16 years of age
- Weigh at least 110 lbs.
- Pass physical and health history examinations prior to donation
- Clear of HIV/AIDS virus
- Don’t use drugs, steroids, etc.
There may be other factors that can affect one’s ability to donate. For more information, check out the Blood FAQ on the AABB website.
Noltensmeyer Insurance Services is committed to contributing to the community and to good causes. Donating blood is one way to do so! Improving the health of those in need is quite a good deed and a great way to kick off the New Year.
