The brand new Garmin Edge 810 units have begun shipping at the Heart Rate Watch Company and testers for the company have already deemed the 810 as the most sophisticated bike computer in the world.
"These units in the previous generation's 800 were already in a class of their own with full-color maps, turn by turn directions and touch screen navigation", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "Adding the Garmin Edge out front bike mount for better visibility and stability, plus the new instant upload and tracking features puts this unit out there in a league of its own".
The new Garmin Edge 510 units, while introduced at the same time, will not be delivered until early February according to Squire. "The new Edge 510 was the benefactor of much of the Garmin 810 technology in that it received touch screen, barometric altimeter and some of the features the 800 series introduced two years ago", says Squire.
HOW INSTANT UPLOAD AND TRACKING WORK
The new instant upload feature and tracking require that you have a Smartphone that is Bluetooth Smart compatible. The new Garmin Edge 810 has Bluetooth Smart embedded within it for data communication purposes even though the device uses the ANT+ stand for talking to sensors like chest straps and cadence sensors. "By getting the data to a Smartphone that can upload data it allows for instant upload to Garmin Connect software, Facebook, Twitter and more, it's pretty cool stuff", says Squire.
There are a lot of people that carry Smart phones during training for safety purposes but, as Squire says, "It is not efficient technology for racing since nobody carries one on race day, it’s normally reserved for training".
"We've been testing the out front bike mount and that is just a super feature in our opinion", says Squire. He adds, "It's more stable than a stem mount and offers much better forward visibility when looking at data - when you are going 25 miles per hour that's the name of the game".
