On the heels of its 20 year anniversary, The Gateway for Cancer ResearchSM, a nonprofit organization that funds innovative, bold and patient-centered cancer clinical trials across the world, has established an annual award to honor clinical researchers for excellence in the field of cancer research and patient impact. Nominations are now open for Gateway’s inaugural Researcher of the Year Award, which will be announced and presented to a forward-thinking clinical researcher this spring in Chicago.

“With this award, our intent is to lift high the significant contributions and new treatment discoveries made by Gateway-funded researchers,” said Eveline Mumenthaler, director of research and grants at The Gateway for Cancer Research. “What’s more, this award brings to light the importance and continued need for innovation in cancer research, while also celebrating the positive impact new discoveries have made to the lives of both cancer patients and their families.”

Eligible nominees for the Researcher of the Year Award include clinical investigators who are currently funded by Gateway or have previously received a Gateway grant, are committed to discovering new treatments, and have made measureable and impactful contributions to the field of cancer research with the goal to improve the lives of today’s cancer patients. Nominees will be assessed by Gateway’s esteemed Awards Committee, consisting of members of Gateway’s Board of Scientific Counselors. For complete award criteria, visit

Gateway will announce the winner at its Annual Meeting in Chicago on May 14 among peers in the research community, members of Gateway’s Board of Directors and Board of Scientific Counselors, and Gateway supporters. At the event, the honored recipient will be presented with a commemorative award, and $30,000 will be given to the researcher’s institution to further his or her award-winning research.

“We are passionate about our mission to fund cancer research in new drug investigations, novel combination therapies, and complementary and alternative therapies that has the potential to help cancer patients feel better, live longer or be cured today,” said Mumenthaler. “We work in close partnership with other leaders in the cancer research field to bring about research that aims to positively impact cancer patients when they need it most.”

For Gateway, it’s always been about the patient and making real progress toward the discovery of less toxic treatments. While the traditional approach to cancer research has yielded notable successes over the years, Mumenthaler points out that Gateway is committed to seeing even greater advancements for today’s cancer patients.

“Our vision goes beyond the conventional research approach as we encourage researchers to think outside the box, while always taking into consideration the interests and well-being of the patient,” added Mumenthaler.

Gateway is considered to be unique among non-governmental cancer research organizations. The charity has a sole focus on funding patient-centered phase I and phase II cancer clinical trials in conventional as well as complementary therapies. With generous corporate underwriting, Gateway is able to commit ninety-nine cents of every dollar it receives to the funding of cancer research studies that aim to help patients feel better, live longer or to be cured.

The deadline for submitting nominations for Gateway’s Researcher of the Year award is March 1, 2013.
