Randy McCormick, D.D.S., P.C., INC., now offers relief to those who experience jaw pain, pain in the shoulders and neck area, facial tenderness or in the ear area when yawning or chewing. If you experience this, you may be having issues with TMJ, or temporomandibular Joint Disorder. There is a greater tendency for women to have issues with this than men, and it typically affects people aged 20 to 40. Additional symptoms may be earaches or headaches as well as dizziness, a ringing in the ears, and a clicking or popping sound in the joint area when one opens and closes their mouth.
With a multitude of symptoms that may be related to TMJ, one may wonder what actually causes the disorder. Unfortunately, the main cause is not known at this time, but the symptoms seem to be related to the parts of the joint itself as well as problems with the muscles in the area. Even though the main cause has not yet been pinpointed, when there is trauma to the area, teeth grinding or bruxism, frequent teeth clenching, rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, these things can contribute to the disorder.
There are a number of treatments for the jaw pain caused by this disorder. Frequently, the body will simply heal itself as the joint in the jaw rests while a person is unable to chew because of the pain. In addition, anti-inflammatory medications may treat the pain and swelling that are sometimes symptoms, and some patients see improvement with the application of warm compresses.
In addition, Dr. McCormick may show a patient relaxation and stretching techniques that can help the jaw to relax. Another treatment for the jaw pain could be a bite plate or splint that resembles a sports guard. It fits over the upper and lower teeth and reduces nighttime grinding and clenching of the teeth, which can reduce the muscle tension that contributes to the problem. In rare instances, replacement of the jaw joint may be indicated. More information on TMJ can be found at http://www.gumdiseasetulsa.com.
