The Kissing Hand Project is still in need of mittens with hearts sewn or knitted into the left palm for the children of elementary schools in Newtown, Conn.

The mittens will be given to the children during a book reading of "The Kissing Hand" by its author Audrey Penn. Each elementary school student in Newtown will also receive a copy of the book, which has been generously donated by Tanglewood Press Publishing.

"The Kissing Hand" has been used for years to provide comfort to children just starting school or other situations involving separation of children from parents. In the story, a mother raccoon gives her kit, who is afraid to start school, a kiss in his palm and tells him that if he feels scared or lonely, he can put his hand to his cheek and feel her love. Giving Newtown children the book and mittens will provide a message of comfort and love, with the heart in the mitten as a constant reminder.
