In late 2011, the search engine giant revealed that this was going to be one of a number of additions it planned to roll out onto its mobile site. Skip Re-direct is a time saving device on smartphones that automatically sends a user to an individual’s/business’/organisations’ mobile site rather than their traditional desktop one where available. When hovering over the link in the search results, the user will be able to see whether or not the URL is for a mobile or desktop site.

Google’s Pierre Far has spoken on this matter in a Google Webmaster help thread and revealed that the Skip Re-direct will only become active if a mobile site is ranking on Google. Although some of the forum posters expressed concerns that their new customers and consumers would suffer a reduction in service quality, if exposed immediately to a mobile site rather than a desktop one, Skip Re-direct is estimated to save users approximately one second when searching on smartphones.
