New Tech Network (NTN) schools located in Texas, Hawaii and Arkansas have been named as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-2013 school year. Belton New Tech @ Waskow, Cross County High School, New Tech High @ Coppell, New Tech Odessa, Manor New Technology High School, and Searider Production Academy each received the Apple Distinguished School Designation reserved for schools that showcase educational excellence through innovation and leadership.

Lydia Dobyns, president of New Tech Network, praised the schools on winning the award.

“The faculty, staff and school leaders at each of these schools are to be commended for their tremendous work to achieve this honor. Each of these New Tech schools have excelled at providing educational experiences that are innovative, rigorous and will prepare students for college and career,” Dobyns said.

The selection of six New Tech Network schools as an Apple Distinguished School highlights their successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology. Each school features a one-to-one student to computer ratio.

Echo, New Tech Network’s learning management system (LMS), is designed to support Project-based learning (PBL), facilitate communication and collaboration, and improve teacher practice. Teachers, students, and parents use technology on a daily basis to access course resources, project plans, assignments, a multi-dimensional gradebook, online groups, and an extensive library of instructional resources.

Adrian Vega, director for New Tech Odessa (NTO) in Texas believes educators need to meet students where they live, in a world that is connected 24/7.

"Students today are digital natives. We need to engage with our students in order to prepare them for today’s careers," Vega said.

Students at New Tech Odessa integrate technology into every classroom in meaningful ways by using iMovie to cultivate digital literacy skills and leveraging the power of social media to document, narrate, and share the evolving educational experience with the broader Odessa community.

New Tech Network opened more than three dozen new schools in 2012, expanding to 120 schools in 18 states and Australia. Each school uses the Network’s innovative design principles that create relevant and rigorous learning experiences. In 2010-11, NTN schools achieved an annual graduation rate of 97 percent and a four-year cohort rate of 86 percent. In addition, the New Tech Network student acceptance rate to two- and four-year colleges was 98 percent.
