(ISC)2(R) Announces 2012 Recipients of Harold F. Tipton Lifetime Achievement and James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Awards

(ISC)2 Board of Directors Recognizes Cyber Security Luminaries for their Pioneering, Lifelong Industry Achievements

(ISC)2® (“ISC-squared”), the world’s largest not-for-profit information security professional body and administrators of the CISSP®, has selected Prof. Hiroshi Yasuda, Dr. E., CISSP, professor, Tokyo Denki University, School of Science for Future Life, Japan, for the 2012 (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Lifetime Achievement Award, and Richard Koenig, CISSP, for the 2012 James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award.
The annual (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Award recognizes an individual’s lifelong contributions to the improvement of the information security field and profession. The award’s namesake, Harold F. Tipton, was a security industry pioneer and an (ISC)² founder. The annual James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award recognizes volunteers who have made a sustained and valuable contribution to (ISC)2. The award’s namesake was instrumental in shaping (ISC)² through his active and tireless volunteerism.

As the recipient of the 2012 Harold F. Tipton Award, Prof. Hiroshi Yasuda was honored for his efforts to raise awareness for cyber security throughout Japan and international communities. His distinguished career as an educator and advocate for information security has spanned over fifty years. In 2009, he was awarded The Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan and is a Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of EICEJ and IPSJ. He served as chairperson of the International Organization for Standardization's of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29 from 1991-1993. Prof. Yasuda has also published several books on coding and compression.

“Prof. Yasuda is one of the most recognized and respected information security luminaries in Japan,” said Freddy Tan, chair, (ISC)2 Board of Directors. “He has received some of the highest honors bestowed to those worthy of lifetime achievement, and the Board is honored to add this year’s Tipton Award to his long list of accomplishments.”

As the recipient of the 2012 James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award, Richard Koenig was recognized for the instrumental role he played in the formation of (ISC)2 as one of the organization’s founders. His service and dedication as (ISC)2 officer, secretary, president, and other roles during the formative years helped to set unprecedented industry standards and best practices for information security.

“(ISC)2’s integrity and very foundation was built upon the expertise and volunteer efforts of its membership: It is therefore paramount to recognize those responsible for going above and beyond to further (ISC)2’s mission,” said Board Awards Committee chair Prof. Corey Schou, Fellow of (ISC)2, CSSLP. “Mr. Koenig demonstrated his dedication by developing industry standards and playing numerous volunteer roles during (ISC)2’s formative years. We are honored to recognize him for his professional valor and for his contributions that have shaped our organization.” Prof. Schou continued, “This year’s award recipients are innovators and leaders within their local and professional communities, and their accomplishments are sure to have a lasting impact on both the information security profession and (ISC)².”
