A young soldier forced to escape the bloodbath of 19th-century China’s Taping Rebellion finds a new life in the goldfields of Australia and New Zealand in “Memories in the Bone: He Who Pursues Revenge Digs Two Graves” (published by AuthorHouse), the new historical fiction by Mee-mee Phipps.
Zhou Yu, one of the last survivors of the rebellion, watches helplessly as his brother, the loyal Captain Zhou Yun, is decapitated in the Suzhou town square, and is forced to flee China.
His missionary aunt gives him sanctuary in Shanghai and secures him passage on a ship for Australia, where even in the midst of his success in the gold fields and later Melbourne he is haunted by the appearance of a mysterious scarred man.
In this compelling story, a young soldier soon discovers that he may leave behind loved ones but the tentacles of his bloody past have the power to reach beyond the seas to a remote village in faraway New Zealand, where ancient taboo customs and the pursuit of revenge are constantly teaching him about the burden of life and death in a changing world.
“The struggles in this book are still going on today,” Phipps writes. “The suffering of people caught up in internecine wars are ongoing as are the dreams and hopes of peace and love for a better world.”
