Seneca Builds Custom High Performance Cluster for Brookhaven National Laboratory

New technology cluster drives research in the Condensed Matter Theory Group

Seneca®, a leading manufacturer of innovative technology solutions has successfully completed a major installation for Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). BNL is a United States Department of Energy research lab that conducts research to excel science and advance technology. The newly deployed compute cluster provides enhanced and expanded research capability along with the necessary resources to scale across multiple projects.

“A large amount of data is required for computation of electronic structure of correlated functional materials”, said Wei Ku, Physicist, Condensed Matter Theory, Brookhaven National Laboratory. “The required amount of memory per core often exceeds the capacity of modern supercomputers or GPU-based systems, which made Seneca’s Beowulf cluster the ideal solution for our computational need”.

“Seneca met on-site with the entire BNL team to explore different solutions to meet their research requirements,” said Michael Smith Senior HPC Market Development Manager, Seneca. “As a result of that meeting, we needed to design a highly dense, rack efficient solution, with a low energy footprint to fill BNL’s requirements. To achieve the level of density required by the project, we reached out to our ecosystem to evaluate a variety of new technologies to offer the best solution, resulting in our engagement with Quanta QCT.”

To achieve the level of compute density necessary to make BNL’s deployment a success, BNL chose Seneca to install the 2U four node solution. The BNL cluster integrated and installed by Seneca consists of:

  • Compute power supplied by the Intel Xeon Processor E5-2670
  • Highly dense 2U form factor
  • 8 CPUs per chassis
  • Quanta S810-X52L 2U 4 node server platform
