Digital representation and fabrication continues to be a truly disruptive innovation, transforming manufacturing processes in the 21st century as much as the steam engine did in the 18th. To prepare creative professionals to take full advantage of these technologies and update their skill set, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art has expanded its program to provide a new, comprehensive Certificate in Digital Representation and Fabrication in its Department of Continuing Education. With the increased accessibility to digital prototyping machines, Cooper Union’s certificate program enables those working in art, architecture, design, science and other related fields to become more knowledgeable about digital interfaces and 2- and 3-D fabrication, a growing requirement in today’s competitive professional and creative environment.
“We are currently experiencing a digital revolution where creative fields are directly benefiting from the increasing capabilities of digital interfaces and rapid prototyping,” said David Greenstein, Director of Public Programs and Continuing Education at The Cooper Union. “The certificate program creates a rare opportunity for each student to develop an individual strategy and create physical forms in his/her discipline or cross boundaries among several disciplines.”
For the spring term, the Department’s innovative certificate program is offering the six courses noted below, which include a range of digital representation, design and fabrication workshops. The new certificate program is led by Certificate Director, Professor Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, widely known for integrating theory and experimental practice. A recognized scholar and professor in the fields of art, architecture, computation and theory, Lorenzo-Eiroa is the author of several publications including Life in:formation, which he co-edited for the ACADIA 2010 conference at The Cooper Union.
“Understanding interfaces and structuring information is critical for artists working on sculpture projects or architects and designers who seek to create radical novel forms. Before digital fabrication, the designer had to propose a design and then create a means to communicate the execution of the design through building a representational model. With fabrication, designers can bypass this step and directly develop and execute 3-D work,” explained Professor Lorenza-Eiroa. “The Digital Representation and Fabrication Certificate program enables students to collect, analyze, assemble and represent information through computational systems, in addition to learning personal strategies for critical work with these advanced tools.”
A free and public introductory lecture by Professor Lorenzo-Eiroa will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, 5PM, The Cooper Union (41 Cooper Square, Rose Auditorium, NY, NY 10003) for those professionals seeking to learn more about the Digital Fabrication and Representation Certificate Program.
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is a distinguished private college of art, architecture and engineering founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, an inventor, industrialist and philanthropist.
