SPRING, Texas (PRWEB) January 22, 2013
Dr. Clarence Johnson’s new book “Roll Call: 2012” (published by AuthorHouse) is an account of his professional career as an educator concentrating on teaching and learning mathematical skills. Learning mathematical skills, Johnson believes, starts at home and continues through school to build a strong pattern of student success. A clear path of connecting the home with school in learning mathematical skills is presented in “Roll Call: 2012.”
Speaking of the need for his book, Johnson says:
“America lags behind in the world in mathematics – ranked 15th in science and mathematics. African American students are near the bottom of all ethnic groups in mathematics in America. ‘Roll Call: 2012’ focuses on teaching algebra at the junior high school level to African American students. All community partners must take a bold initiative to help improve the accessibility of African American students in acquiring upper level mathematics courses and skills during junior high school. Raising the mathematics skills' level of African American students will impact everyone in America. This will impact being ranked 15th in mathematics in the world.”
During his 14 years as a high school principal, Johnson was concerned with the learning curve of African American students in mathematics when compared to other ethnic groups. When he conducted research as a doctoral student on the failure rate of African American students in mathematics, he examined the data and found solutions to the problem – solutions he presents in “Roll Call: 2012.”
