Author Lesley A. Anderson finds an entertaining tool to provide children a better understanding and wisdom about their skin color through her book, Black and White Make Gray… But I’m Not an Elephant. While children could be very inquisitive about the origin of their skin color—some of them would ask more questions; especially, when they do not resemble their parents’ skin—this book can be the best way to explain to them the situation.

This charming book combines creative school activity, parent-child bonding, and self discovery together to create an opportunity for young readers to explore themselves and their skin color. Here, they will find the story of Lesley, who is excited to share with her mother that she had fun playing with paint and mixing different colors at school. She reveals her excitement when she discovers a new color from combining two different ones. However, when she combined black and white, she made gray. This discovery begins to stir her mind and asks many questions to her mother about her own skin color. Will her mother be able to give her an explanation that will enlighten her?

Educational, entertaining, lesson-filled, and vibrantly illustrated, this book is truly an endearing piece that will inspire children to explore themselves and understand their skin color better. It is also a good teaching tool and an ideal parent-child bonding instrument.
