“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” Such are the compelling words of Mark Twain, and thus begins the newly published book of author and park ranger David J. Suvak. He shares his adventures and misadventures, funny and not-so-funny events, in A Test Drive To Chicago: And Other Trips and Tales.
The book is a creative twinning of two worlds: Suvak’s burning desire to tell stories and his love for travel. It is a fruit of a long-began passion and desire to hit the road. Whoever said “Traveling is addicting,” was probably right. Ever since Suvak tried joy riding when he was a teen, he has gone off to several adventures after that.
“Back when I was seventeen, a buddy and I took a car for a test drive. I guess we really wanted to test it because we drove it all the way from the suburbs of Cleveland to Chicago,” shares Suvak. “That was one of the first of many trips in my life. Since then, they have been tamer and less intense but, certainly, still exciting.”
The book makes readers rendezvous at Parma, Ohio, when it was the eighth biggest city in the state with tightly packed houses and a fine mixture of small and large businesses. Then, he drives readers to Chicago, and around several states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Colorado, Kansas and California. He takes them atop a summit on the Blue Ridge Mountain Chain, along the Potomac River, and to Rocky Mountain National Park.
“I’ve come across quite a few memorable people and places, and this story touches some of those experiences,” Suvak adds. “We all have our little story to tell about our lives, and this is mine. It is here that I share them with you, and I hope you find some enjoyment out of it.”
In A Test Drive To Chicago, the accounts are mostly true. Only a few slight modifications have been created or changed to fill in for those memories that have died due to time. This makes it not only an entertaining read, but as well as an informal travel guide interspersed with interesting inside stories.
