Sixty percent of students entering two-year colleges and 25 percent of those entering open-admissions universities are placed in remediation, according to a report by Complete College America. Proven approaches to accelerating remediation include redesigning courses to achieve better learning outcomes, by designing instructionally sound curricula and using personalized products that enable students to learn at their own pace and measure their progress. More than 400 universities, colleges and community college systems are partnering with Pearson to carry out these approaches to effectively assess and remediate developmental skills to keep their students on the path to degree completion and career readiness.

Northern Arizona University recently partnered with Pearson to help improve college readiness. “We partnered with Pearson to help reduce the number of students who need remedial courses, as well as to redesign select freshman-level subjects to significantly increase student achievement,” said Karen Pugliesi, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean, University College, Northern Arizona University. “Ultimately, we hope to increase progress of first year students by improving their academic performance through the use of innovative digital materials and instructional software that individualize learning pathways and offer academic support tailored to students’ needs in real time.”

In Virginia, several institutions in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) have selected MyMathLab and custom textbooks for their Developmental Math course redesigns. Placing student success as their top goal, VCCS is aiming for a 50 percent increase in the number of students who complete their degree, transfer to a four-year school or earn a work credential, with a 75 percent target increase for minority students. MyLab and Mastering products are fully customizable and can be used in any environment — lab-based, blended, fully online learning or classroom. MyLab and Mastering help improve results for students by providing more engaging experiences so they absorb course material more quickly and better understand difficult concepts.

“Just about every educational institution Pearson works with continues to tell us that the effort to increase college and career readiness in their students is at the top of their priority list,” said Don Kilburn, Vice Chairman of Higher Education and CEO of Pearson Learning Solutions. “Pearson is committed to this effort and is partnering with institutions to design effective curricula and provide innovative technology solutions, to support faculty and help students achieve their academic, career and lifelong goals.”

Additional institutions that are working with Pearson to improve student performance in reading, writing and math, include California State University Bakersfield, the University of Hawaii System Community Colleges, Cerritos College, Pima Community College, Athens Technical College, and Georgia Piedmont Technical College.
