The flight was above regulatory weight limits due to an exceptionally high proportion of male passengers
(PRWEB UK) 23 January 2013
A well established budget airline was 300kg overweight after passengers were mostly overweight men. The flight from Liverpool to Geneva was delayed by an hour and a half due to an ‘exceptionally high proportion of male passengers.’
Originally the airline offered £100 compensation to any passengers willing to leave the flight and board a later plane, yet this failed to encourage any passengers onboard with nobody willing to leave. Travellers onboard the flight took an impromptu move to raise some additional funds, ‘They announced that the plane was 300kg overweight and the pilot asked for volunteers to get off…they offered £100 compensation…and the rest of the passengers then put a few quid in to help them out.’
The statement released by the company explained, ‘The flight was above regulatory weight limits due to an exceptionally high proportion of male passengers and more hold luggage than usual. In these circumstances volunteers are required to offload and are offered £100. Four volunteers came forward and the flight departed shortly afterwards.’
Smart Luggage, the UK’s leader in luggage solutions commented on the incident, ‘Airlines take standard weight measurements for both male and female customers and in this case there were too many males on board, some exceeding the standard estimated weight. We are pleased to learn that the issue was quickly resolved and the flight could take off.’
