Georgia woman plans to pursue MBA at online university

As a young girl in Jamaica, Shernette Roberts developed an appreciation for education early on when her father drove many hours to get her and her siblings to and from school.

“My father’s act of selflessness instilled the value of education in me and solidified my passion for learning,” said Roberts, whose passion was evident in her winning essay for a Columbia Southern University (CSU) Learning Partner Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to employees/members of companies or organizations that partner with CSU, an online university based in South Alabama. Those who partner with CSU also receive a learning partnership grant which allows employees/members to save 10 percent on tuition.

The Learning Partner Scholarship covers tuition for up to 24 months for one specific online degree program. Roberts, who is a CSU graduate, plans to use to the scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in public administration.

“Education is one of the most important aspects in my life. It is becoming even more important than it has been in the past because employers today now seek to find the best-trained individuals,” said Roberts, an investigative assistant with the Department of Homeland Security.

“I believe that the curriculum taught at CSU will emphasize the practical and theoretical methods necessary for me to succeed as a leader. So much is offered to me in the way of education and I'm taking full advantage in pursuit of a master’s degree in business administration/public administration.”

Roberts, who lives in Tyrone, Ga., hopes to advance her career with the online master’s degree as “I am trying to lay a strong foundation for my future and to expand my knowledge of the world through education.”

“Furthermore, I believe that the most important concept that I have espoused in being independent is being a parent. I have faced many trials, balancing work and school, and paying the bills while raising my child as a single mother, but it has strengthened my resolve to be successful.”

CSU offers online associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs in various fields including criminal justice, fire science, occupational safety and health, and business administration.
