There are many factors to consider when choosing courses for senior year, and students need to spend some time planning their schedule.
Denver, CO (PRWEB) January 23, 2013
As second semester gets underway, high schools are beginning to have students sign up for classes for next year. This is an especially important process for juniors, as colleges look closely at what classes students take their senior year.
Sara Zessar, a former high school counselor and Senior Associate with Montgomery Educational Consulting, recently published an article on her company's website with tips for senior year course selection. Ms. Zessar explained, "There are many factors to consider when choosing courses for senior year, and students need to spend some time planning their schedule."
First, Ms. Zessar advises that students meet with their school counselor to go over their school's graduation requirements. Students need to make sure they sign up for courses that will fulfill any requirements they haven't yet met. Additionally, if students have taken honors/advanced courses in previous years, they should continue to challenge themselves; if they haven't ever taken such courses, they should try one or two.
Senior year also is a good time to explore passions and take courses that students have not had the chance to take before. Finally, students need to understand that completing college and scholarship applications will require a significant amount of time, so they should leave room in their schedule for that. "As a former high school counselor, I used to tell rising seniors that they should think of their college applications as a class, because that’s how much time most students need to spend on them," Ms. Zessar said.
