In response to the constant negativity of today’s media coverage, lifestyle and fitness expert and entrepreneur Luke Sniewski has created #niceRAK to highlight positive human experiences. An acronym for Nice Random Act of Kindness, #niceRAK strives to celebrate human kindness by encouraging others to share their acts of kindness on social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Sniewski's campaign to spread kindness ties well with the recent 26 Acts of Kindness campaign started by NBC's Ann Curry in which thousands of people committed to performing and sharing 26 good deeds in honor of the 20 children and six teachers lost in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14.
Sniewski believes that sharing such selfless, positive experiences has the potential to not only brighten a person’s day, but also to change our entire mental landscapes. In fact, studies have shown that acts of altruism and selflessness not only benefit their recipients, but also their provider. According to Sniewski, “The bottom line is that being kind and helping others is truly helping good ol’ #1: you.”
By publicizing good works through #niceRAK, Sniewski hopes to make kindness the norm rather than the exception. “People shouldn’t feel confused or awkward about kindness,” he says. “Being generous to others can dominate our mental landscape if we allow it to. It just takes time and effort to shift the focus.”
