Following an article about Puke Ariki Library turning to debt collection agencies for tardy book borrowers, Rapid Recovery Solution offered their comments.

On January 26, 2013, collection services, Rapid Recovery Solution, commented on a Taranaki Daily News article by Hannah Fleming, regarding New Plymouth’s Puke Ariki Library passing overdue book fines on to collection agencies.

According to the Taranaki Daily News article, “Tardy library book borrowers have been referred to debt collectors and had their memberships blocked for not returning books or paying overdue fines.” The article states that since January 2011, 170 people have had their library accounts blocked and $26,000 in overdue fines have been accumulated.

According to the library’s service delivery coordinator, Dale Cousens, "For the most part our members are very good at getting items back to us on time. There are currently 39,574 items on loan and of those about 6 per cent, or just under 2400, are overdue." Cousens stated in the article that some members owe up to $200 in overdue book fines.

The article mentions that fines that have reached six months overdue are turned over to a collection agency. Cousens says in the article that, "We send three notices to say the items are due back and if we don't hear from you in any way shape or form - and if the amount is over $50 - then we contact the debt collectors.”

John Monderine, CEO of collection services agency, Rapid Recovery Solution, commented on the article with his thoughts on the libraries collection tactics. “It comes down to the simple fact that money is owed to the library, and long overdue,” said Monderine. “The library staff should not have to worry about tracking people down to pay their debts, so hiring a collection agency was the proper step for the library to take.”
