In an engaging narrative that showcases childhood domestic dilemmas, young author Juwuan Livingston provides a realistic portrayal of some challenges a child faces at home. To be featured at the 2013 Florida Library Association Book Exhibit in Orlando, Fla. on May 1 – 3, 2013, One Word for Good: Many Words for Bad invites the readers to follow the story of a 13-year-old boy and relate to his sentiments.

Though a fictional narrative, this picture book is a realistic portrayal of some challenges a child faces at home. In the book, the main character gets scolded by his parents for not completing simple household chores. They only have one word for his good deeds, but an entire oratorical piece when it comes to his bad actions. He wonders why. Each time he gets scolded about something that he did wrong or forgot to do, he wonders why it’s necessary for his parents to use so many words to complain about the bad things that he does. They, however, never seem to have too much to say when he does a good job on his chores.

In One Word for Good: Many Words for Bad, Livingston has deftly written a wonderful, lesson-filled tale which also depicts how people, in general, are scanty with their words of praise, respect, and honor. When it’s time to complain, reprimand, or admonish, however, people tend to go on and on with their harangue. With its colorful and vivid illustrations, this book is one interesting read children can surely relate to and understand.
