“It’s Not about Childhood Obesity” provides step-by-step guidance for teens and young adults to learn how to balance their scale of caloric intake and physical activity in an effort to live healthy for life.

In her new book “It’s Not about Childhood Obesity: It is about Being Healthy for Life” (published by Inspiring Voices) Dr. Olga Vaca Durr draws from her experience working with children, delivering a guidebook to help people – especially young people – live healthier lives by balancing their scales of caloric intake and physical activity.
Childhood, according to Vaca Durr, is the most influential time for a person to establish physical activity behaviors that they carry with them throughout their life. These behaviors, she says, have the potential to influence either positive or negative health habits in adulthood. She sites the work of many experts who believe that children today might be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents because of the epidemic of obesity.
“Today in the U.S. 31.7% of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese, and being overweight is the most common health problem for youth,” she says. “It’s Not about Childhood Obesity” provides step-by-step guidance for teens and young adults to learn how to balance their scale of caloric intake and physical activity in an effort to live healthy for life.
Vaca Durr feels strongly that obesity is a pattern which stems from behaviors passed down in families; she hopes to end the cycle with “It’s Not about Childhood Obesity.” “My observations as an educator are that America’s youth are becoming more and more unhealthy,” she says. “At the same time, they lack the resources and knowledge to make positive changes on their own, changes that could ultimately last for generations to come.”
