“Genius is near to insanity.” This Gloria Kingsnorth found to be true to her everlasting mortification and disgust. An illegitimate cousin, born out of wedlock and statutory rape, spirited to the United States to grow up and be educated there, is now a successful multibillionaire with the name Grant Wilson Billings IV. Whereas Gloria knew him to be Troy Gazda, the son of her uncle Martin Braut – a proud lout whose bragging letter to Gloria and two of Martin's sisters revealed the truth behind Grant’s identity and origin. This is the dramatic point that propels Gloria Marie Kingsnorth’s A Matter of Family, a thrilling novel of family intrigue.
Written as the fictional Gloria’s memoirs, it is the involving tale of her attempt to expose a family curse bestowed upon them through trickery and deception. The curse, though, is physically represented by a now powerful human being named Grant Billings. Stepping carefully through lies, sleuthing through the past to find the truth, Gloria knows she must plan well to expose the curse. This novel, too, is about the search for answers, a struggle for truth and identity. Kingsnorth uses the epistolary memoir mode that, for its fiery literary forensics alone, is well worth the read.
The style chosen by the author to create plot and narrative is tricky. Her progress is dictated by Gloria’s argument for positive karmic justice to be given to her extended family members. Kingsnorth, the author, and Gloria, the fictional characters are both in the quest for this justice to be wrought on the world. Part exorcism, part story of one woman’s journey to hell and back, A Matter of Family lets out a myriad of issues stemming from the secrecy and deception of the curse bestowed by Billings’ presence in the world, and lays them to rest in the quest to unravel the veil of dishonesty that cloaks this multibillionaire cousin’s true identity.
