theSwizzle™, the free email organizer that helps consumers easily unsubscribe from unwanted commercial emails, announced that today, Thursday, January 24th is National Clean Your Inbox Day. This annual event encourages everyone with an email account to take control of their inboxes following a record 19% rise in commercial emails throughout 2012.

“Consumers received a record number of commercial emails in 2012, and while everyone loves hearing from their favorite brands and receiving the latest news and deals, the evidence suggests that inboxes became simply overloaded by frequent communications,” stated MaryAnn Bekkedahl, who is also a member of National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO).
“Clean Up Your Inbox Day takes place in January as it dovetails nicely with people’s new year’s resolutions to get organized, clean up and start fresh. Additionally, all that online shopping for the holidays leads to a bit of 'inbox hangover,' coming from retailer subscriptions resulting from the holiday transactions. We encourage everyone to take three minutes to clean up their inbox – it will lead to better productivity and help you regain control of an important space in your life – your inbox.”

In 2012, 77% of consumers said they prefer email as the channel of communication for permission-based marketing messages. Over the same period, the top online retailers sent each of their subscribers a record number of promotional emails, soaring 19% from a year earlier to 210 emails sent.
