On January 28, Online Bed Quilt responds to an article published by the Salt Lake Tribune on ways to avoid insomnia.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune article, many people suffer from insomnia. Though some people might be born with it, others find themselves losing sleep due to inadequate sleep environment and bad sleep habits. Some of these bad habits can result from high anxiety over the every day pressures of life.
The article said your brain goes over all the information you acquired during the day and stimulates cell generation and recovery. Your immune system also “reboots” itself to decrease the chance of disease or illness. When you don’t sleep, research has found that you are more likely to develop health complications, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity.
However, there are ways to remedy a lack of sleep. The article pointed out two major “sleep killers”—coffee or caffeine, and light. It said that when you drink too much coffee or soda, the caffeine blocks the release of adenosine, a sleep-inducing brain chemical, as well as the sleep hormone melatonin.
“In an Israeli study, subjects given caffeinated coffee had about half as much melatonin in their systems as those who were given decaf,” the article said. “They also took twice as long to fall asleep and slumbered an average of 79 minutes less.”
The article also pointed out that light makes a significant difference in sleep. Light emitted from electronics can fool your body into thinking the day hasn’t ended yet, so you won’t fall asleep.
Representative Justin Maas from Online Bed Quilt said light and caffeine really prohibit your body from getting the necessary amount of sleep. “Caffeine hypes up your body and makes you more alert,” he said. “At that point, fully relaxing is nearly impossible. If you want to sleep better, light exposure should also be diminished. Stay off electronics late at night!”
Maas said people should also realize they need to make changes in their sleeping environments. “Beds cost a lot of money because they are worth a lot of money,” he said. “Your bed is what’s going to really make a difference in your sleep, and investing in a good one will be worth it. Your body recovers during sleep, but you have to give it a chance to do so. If you aren’t sleeping on a bed rightfully suited for your body, it won’t let your body maximize its restoration and recovery process.”
