On January 29, 2013, collection services company Rapid Recovery Solution comments on an article published by The Oakland Press which reports on a Michigan library that will be using debt collection services to collect overdue fines.
According to an article written by Michael P. McConnell for The Oakland Press, patrons of Michigan’s Ferndale Library who have at least a two-month overdue fine of $20 or more will receive a letter from a collection services company that the library has hired. The hired collection agency has also worked with the Clinton-Macomb Public Library, reports the article.
Larry Neal, the Library Director of Clinton-Macomb, states to The Oakland Press, “The big advantage is getting items returned to us and fines paid that people think they are not obligated to pay. Collection agencies help us trace people when they don’t return items and move out of state. If the items are not returned and the fines paid, it can hurt their credit rating.”
The Oakland Press reports that the Ferndale library has lost $41,000 worth of unreturned materials and has an additional $25,000 in unpaid overdue fees since 2007. According to Jessica Keyser, the Director of Ferndale Library, “the library has about 2,500 books, DVDs and CDs missing from its collection over the past five years.”
John Monderine, CEO of collection services company Rapid Recovery Solution, comments on the article by stating, “Honestly, this was a good move for the Ferndale Library. Like Mr. Neal said, some people believe they aren’t obligated to pay these fines. However, sometimes when library books or DVDs go missing and patrons are unwilling to pay, it’s only right for the library to be able to recover those funds.” Monderine continues, “By hiring a collection company, patrons will understand the importance of returning library property in a timely matter.”
