Suicide is a destructive event that cripples the persons left by the victim. Author Reanne Goes pens a constructive book to assist people suffering from depression. In her debut book Surviving Suicide: How I Reclaimed My Life, Goes shares how she redeemed herself from the anguish and grief of losing her brother who took his own life.

Suicide is a prominent public concern in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around one in six Australian men suffer from depression. Moreover, the male depression is often more problematical since they draw back from professional help and turn to alcohol or drugs to remedy depression and anxiety.

Goes brother, Adam, was a young intelligent, experienced man. However, he took illicit drugs to cover up his true feelings. In the end, drugs took his life on a cold day in June out in the suburbs in Brisbane. Goes found her brother ice-cold, dead that morning.

How she suffered from the guilt, abandonment and the overwhelming misery to the point of depression is outlined in this book. With the help of her friends and external support groups, Goes gained control of her life again and conquered the perils of depression. She decided to share her journey in this book to help people understand how it feels like to be down that desolate road.

“I hope that this book brings more awareness of depression so that both depression and suicide are topics of discussion rather than topics that are taboo,” notes Goes. “Being silent about suicide is not helping those who need help.”

Surviving Suicide: How I Reclaimed My Life recapitulates the turning point of Goes depression and how she reclaimed her life through the help of support people she met in this moving, healing journey. Now that there are more government efforts and independent support groups willing to lend a hand during debilitating times, people undergoing depression should not end in a similar fate as with Adam.
