On January 31, 2013, Muscular Development Store responds to a study examining creatine supplementation in relation to athletic performance.
A recent article in the Natural Standard discusses recent research on the effectiveness of creatine supplementation in improving sports and exercise performance.
Creatine, available in supplement form, is used by fitness enthusiasts, athletes, bodybuilders and extreme athletes in order to build muscle mass. “Creatine supplementation became popular in the 1990s as a natural way to enhance athletic performance and build lean body mass,” according to the article. Creatine is synthesized naturally in the human body, where it is transported to the muscles and stored before being broken down. Creatine supplements typically contain several times the amount found naturally in meat and fish.
The article announced the results of a recent study, published in July 2012, at the Centre for Sports Science and Human Performance at the University of Greenwich. In reviewing previous research on the connection between creatine and athletic performance, the study notes that earlier studies successfully showed that creatine supplementation can increase strength and muscle mass. This new study specifically focused on exercise and sports performance, and found that the effect of creatine diminishes as the length of exercise time increases.
“The study concluded that compared to no creatine supplementation, creatine increased muscle strength and volume from resistance training,” says the article. “Researchers also found that the benefits of creatine were reduced when the duration of exercise increased. The authors suggested that creatine supplementation helped regenerate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) during exercise.”
“Overall,” says the article, “creatine appears to have modest benefits for intense, repetitive exercise lasting less than 30 seconds.”
Brian Turner of Muscular Development Store responds to the results of the study, noting that there is no question about the benefits of incorporating creatine into a balanced muscle-building regimen. He adds, however, that although there is some variation in the way people respond to creatine, we know that supplementing helps us to store more creatine in the muscles, which helps to regenerate the essential energy carrier ATP in between high-intensity workouts. “Over time, this will increase your performance and help you adapt to changes in your training. This study provides more backup for what we already knew: that combining wise creatine use with resistance training is a definite recipe for success.”
