“His liberal application of oil paints results in a wealth of “hidden” images, mostly abstract but sometimes figurative.” —George Blair

The Winfield Gallery presents the exhibition George Blair—The Hidden Images of a Painter, an innovative artistic collaboration between George Blair and Cedric Wentworth.

“The Hidden Images of a Painter”, begins with oil-on-canvas paintings executed by Cedric Wentworth, George Blair, the engineer turned fine art photographer, has produced micro-vignettes and turned them into a suite of prints that are powerful monuments of abstract expressionist art.

These “hidden” images are not readily discernible or seen by the naked eye because of their relatively small size when compared to the large scale of Wentworth’s paintings. These images are the subject of the George Blair’s conceptual micro-photo essay.

By focusing the camera on the rough and random textures of the painted surface, Blair has managed to reveal the painter’s process within a photographic medium. Blair finds combinations of color and surface. By enlarging the tiny detail, Blair has discovered visual relationships within the painting that previously had been unseen. In so doing, Blair has done more than simply chronicle the work of art. Blair has reinterpreted content; thus becoming party to the creative process itself.

The digital images produced by Blair, are the culmination of Blair’s deep personal experience with abstract art, combined with the technical eye of an engineer, are key ingredients in the constructs offered within this suite of prints. Although, this collaboration is ultimately presented in the form of digital photographic imagery, these unique images offer a rare glimpse into the mysterious process that is artistic invention.

Opening Reception with the artist, Saturday, February 2, 2013, 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Winfield Gallery

Exhibition Dates: February 2 — February 23, 2013
