Social support can help with depression and anxiety

Many people with Depression and Anxiety use self-isolation to cope. This is often one of the worst things they can do.

Dr. Garcy, who teaches graduate students in psychology, offers 3 tips for helping depression and anxiety using the social support of others:

1. Learn to take a compliment. "When you are isolated, you are less likely to get positively reinforced," says Garcy. Positive reinforcement, the sense of being rewarded, can come in the form of smiles, praise, and acknowledgment, all of which can elevate your mood.

2. Share your ideas. "When you are isolated, you are less likely to check your ideas against the ideas of others, and your mind can run away with ideas that don't help," Garcy adds. Decreasing isolation allows you to have conversations and "check" your ideas out. This may prevent you from making unhelpful choices.

3. Get a new perspective. "When you're isolated, you are less likely to get the social support you need to improve your mood, and your depression and anxiety can worsen," Garcy elaborates. Social support is widely known to buffer stress. Obtaining this support can connect you to resources, encourage you, give you new ideas to try out, and can reveal new ways to cope with your problems.
